Inside The Mind Of A Dental Practice Manager

Do you have what it takes to lead a team? Have you ever wondered what a dental practice manager does? DTC had a Q and A Session with experienced Practice Manager Katie Robbins from London.

And here's what she told us....

Q: What do you do as a Dental Practice Manager?
A: My job simply is to maintain the smooth running of my practice which involves careful delivery and coordination of a highly effective team. I make sure they have support, protocols, systems, equipment and motivation in order to deliver an excellent, outstanding service.

Q: Do you need to be qualified to get a job as a Dental Practice Manager?
A: I worked as a Dental Receptionist before I was a Manager so I had a lot of experience in this environment. To work as a Practice Manager you don't need any formal qualifications but to be honest I did complete a short course in Dental Practice Management when I started to think about progressing. I wanted to gain more knowledge and gain a certificate so that my boss would take me more seriously.

Q: What qualities to you think make a good practice manager?
A: Well, first of all you need to be very organised! Have great people skills and lots and lots of patience! You spend your day dealing with all kinds of people and no day is ever the same, that's why you must be self disciplined and able to work using your own initiative.

Q: What do you like best about your job?
A: I love most aspects about my job but if I had to pick only one I would say the people I work with, I'm a really social person and can talk for England! In my role I use this character trait to my advantage; I love building effective relationships with both staff and patients.

Q: Would you recommend your job?
A: 100% Yes!! I would recommend this career to anyone who is already working in the dental field and wants to progress in a non-clinical role. I can say first hand I find my job very fulfilling!
